"There! Did you see it?" My friend Denine asked.
"What?" I wondered.
"Stop. Look." Denine instructed. In the distance, I caught sight of what Denine noticed: a mountain lion's tail. The lion gracefully darted across the desert landscape known as Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The mountain lion is a rare and privileged sighting. I grabbed my camera and ran atop a knoll for a better vantage. It was gone--vanished. The lion disappeared but the canyons of the Escalante appeared before us in full glory.
