When we purchased the Manley EXPLORE trailer last year, we intentionally kept it fairly stock. We wanted to get a feel for how the trailer would be used before doing any upgrades, since each use case is so different. Over the last few months we’ve pondered upgrade options (see the January 2014 issue), to decide how best to spend our time & money, hoping to modify the platform for our best long-term goals.

Camp Stoves Part 3 Choosing a camp stove the future is bright

In the first two articles in my ‘Choosing a Camp Stove’ series I discussed the importance of knowing how the types of meals you will be preparing affects the selection of a camping stove.  We learned how stoves are designed for specific styles of outdoor cooking and how flame control and burner size affects the types of meals you can prepare in the field.  We also discussed the most common types of fuels used in modern camping stoves and how they should be factored in when purchasing the stove that is right for you.  Each fuel type comes with advantages and disadvantages that must be weighed when deciding on the stove that is right for you.  In this, our third and final article, I will be taking a step back from all of the technical jargon and will instead be talking about why I am excited about the advancements I am seeing in the camping stove market.

We are big proponents of using relatively inexpensive coolers to store our perishable food while on trips.  In fact, for the last two years we have been teaching cooking classes at Overland Expo out of our inexpensive cooler.   We have experimented with various forms of ice, trying everything from bags of ice-cubes to freezing cans of beer.  This experience has led us to develop these simple tricks for keeping your cooler longer.  Here is our short list of the best ways to keep your cooler cold on extended trips.download_now

Choosing the right camp stove | TCT MagazineI will be the first to admit that there are few things in life I find as rewarding as settling down to a great meal after a day of exploring the backcountry.  I will also admit that the first meals Krista and I prepared in the field were less than stellar.  I was inexperienced cooking in the wilderness on a camp stove.  I had grown up camping with Dutch ovens and had no idea what I was doing when I went to purchase our first stove.  Over time I began to realize that not all camp stoves are created equal, and most have been purposefully designed for certain segments of the outdoor market.

Solar Panel Review | TCT Magazine Januar 2014An increasing number of people are taking personal electronics and 12volt refrigerators on their camping and overlanding trips, and we are no exception.  While these devices allow us to bring some creature comforts from home, they add extra load on our vehicle’s battery.  If left unchecked, these loads can deplete the battery charge and leave it without enough power to start the engine.  While many choose to add a dual battery system to their vehicles, we felt adding a solar panel to the vehicle’s 12volt system would be a more simple solution to extending the battery’s charge.
