"The Truck Whisperer" | Toyota Trucks Chief Engineer Mike Sweers

We KNOW how much you love your Toyota Tundra & Toyota Tacoma trucks! The latest versions of these long-running vehicles, long known for their reliability and ability to retain value, are some of the toughest on the road. We can thank Toyota Trucks Chief Engineer Mike Sweers for that.

Toyota recently released an interview with Mike from York Township, MI, home to the Toyota Technical Center.

In the full interview, Mike answers the following questions, and more:

Exactly what do you do?

"We start with the vehicle concept, looking at what the customer wants, needs, desires, and how that vehicle fits into their daily life and how we – as Akio Toyoda would say – make our customer smile.."

So what is the difference between a Tundra customer and an F-150 customer?

"A Tundra customer is really buying the truck because they know that truck is going to last."

Do sales factor into how you approach these things?

"At the end of the day, we have to sell our product."

What is the design process like?

"It’s a big team effort. But if we consider ourselves an orchestra, my role is the conductor: getting people from all parts of the company to talk together."
